How to Transplant a Rose Bush
Transplant roses while dormant. Prune the top back, dig a wide root ball, replant immediately at the same depth in a prepared hole, and water deeply. Expect a quieter first season as it re-establishes.
The best time to move an established rose is during dormancy, in late winter. Prune the plant back by about a third to reduce stress, then dig as large a root ball as you can manage, taking care to keep roots intact.
Replant right away in a well-prepared hole at the same depth it grew before, backfill with improved soil, and water thoroughly to settle it. Keep it well watered through the following season; some reduced bloom in the first year is normal as the roots recover.
