Rose Diseases and Pests
Most rose problems come down to a handful of familiar diseases and pests. Learn to recognize them early and the great majority are easy to manage — often without chemicals.
The common diseases
Black spot is the most widespread rose disease: black, fringed spots on leaves that yellow and drop. Powdery mildew coats new growth in white powder, and rust shows as orange pustules on leaf undersides. All three are worse in crowded, damp, poorly ventilated plantings.
The common pests
Aphids cluster on new buds and shoots; a strong jet of water or a few days of ladybugs usually settles them. Japanese beetles, spider mites, thrips, and rose sawfly (rose slug) round out the usual suspects. Hand-picking and encouraging natural predators handle light infestations.
A sensible approach
Start with resistant varieties and good culture, tolerate a little cosmetic damage, and escalate only as needed — from water sprays and hand-picking to insecticidal soap or targeted treatments. Reserve stronger controls for genuine outbreaks.
