How to Revive a Dying Rose Bush

To revive a struggling rose, diagnose the cause first: check for drainage problems, prune out dead wood to healthy tissue, water deeply, feed lightly, and mulch. Many 'dead' roses recover from the base.

Before treating, look for the cause — waterlogged soil, drought, disease, or pest damage all present differently. Scrape a cane with your thumbnail: green underneath means living tissue, brown means dead.

Prune all dead and diseased wood back to healthy, green-centered growth. Correct the underlying problem: improve drainage if the soil is soggy, or water deeply if it is bone dry. Then feed lightly, mulch to conserve moisture, and be patient — roses are resilient and often resprout from the base even when the top looks finished.
