How to Prune Hybrid Tea Roses

Prune hybrid teas hard in late winter: keep three to five strong, outward-growing canes and cut them back to about knee height, each cut just above an outward-facing bud.

Hybrid teas bloom best on a small number of strong new canes, so they are pruned harder than most roses. In late winter, remove all weak, twiggy, dead, or crossing growth, aiming to keep three to five of the healthiest, most vigorous canes.

Shorten those keepers to roughly twelve to eighteen inches, making each cut a quarter inch above an outward-facing bud, angled away from it so new growth heads outward and the center stays open. Seal large cuts if cane borers are a problem in your area.
