How to Make Cut Roses Last Longer

Cut roses last longest when you recut the stems under water at an angle, strip submerged leaves, use flower food, and keep the vase cool and out of direct sun — changing the water every couple of days.

Whether from your garden or a florist, cut roses live longer with a little care. Recut each stem at an angle, ideally under running water, so no air blocks the stem's uptake. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, where they rot and foul the water.

Use the sachet of flower food, or a homemade mix of a little sugar and a few drops of bleach, and keep the arrangement in a cool spot away from direct sun and ripening fruit. Refresh the water and recut the stems every two to three days.
