How to Grow Roses on a Fence or Wall
To grow roses on a fence or wall, plant a climbing rose about 18 inches out from the base, install horizontal wires or a trellis, and tie the main canes sideways along them. Horizontal training produces bloom along the whole length.
A fence or wall is the perfect stage for a climbing rose. Plant the rose about eighteen inches away from the base so its roots are not in the driest, poorest soil right at the foot of the structure, and lean it slightly toward the support. Fix horizontal wires every twelve inches or so, or attach a trellis held off the surface for airflow.
The key to a wall full of flowers is to train the main canes as horizontally as possible and tie them in with soft ties; this triggers flowering side shoots all along each cane. Add new canes to the framework each year and shorten the side shoots when you prune in late winter.
