How to Grow Roses in Hot Climates

In hot climates, choose heat-tolerant roses (teas, chinas, and many shrubs), give them afternoon shade in the fiercest heat, mulch heavily, and water deeply and consistently. Feed lightly and expect the best bloom in spring and fall.

Roses can flourish in heat with the right choices. Tea roses, china roses, noisettes, and many modern shrub roses are bred for or thrive in warmth, holding up where thin-petaled hybrid teas may scorch. In the most intense climates, a spot with morning sun and light afternoon shade protects blooms from bleaching and burning.

Mulch generously to keep roots cool and moist, water deeply and consistently (never letting plants wilt), and feed a little less aggressively than in cooler regions, since lush growth struggles in extreme heat. Expect your finest flushes in spring and fall, with a quieter midsummer.
