How Far Apart to Plant Roses

Space most bush roses two to three feet apart. Give large shrubs and climbers three to six feet, and set miniatures a foot or so apart. Adequate spacing is your best defense against disease.

Spacing balances a full look against the airflow that keeps foliage dry and disease-free. As a guide: hybrid teas and floribundas at two to three feet; larger shrub and English roses at three to four feet; climbers and vigorous shrubs at four to six feet; and miniatures at twelve to eighteen inches.

In humid climates, err toward the wider end of each range. Crowded roses trap moisture and are far more prone to black spot and mildew.
