Do Roses Need Full Sun

Yes — most roses need at least six hours of direct sun a day to bloom well. A few tolerate light shade, but sun is the single biggest factor in how freely a rose flowers.

Roses are sun plants. Six or more hours of direct sunlight is the standard, and morning sun is especially valuable because it dries dew quickly and limits disease. In hot climates, some afternoon shade can actually protect blooms from scorching.

A handful of tougher shrubs and old roses will flower in four to five hours of sun, but expect fewer blooms and looser growth. If your only spot is shady, choose the most shade-tolerant varieties and accept a lighter display.
