Bare-Root vs. Potted Roses

Bare-root roses are dormant, economical, and offer the widest selection, but must be planted in the dormant season. Potted roses cost more and plant any time, with instant presence.

Bare-root roses are sold dormant and leafless, with their roots exposed and packed in moist material. They are cheaper, lighter to ship, and available in the greatest variety — but they must be planted while dormant and soaked before going in the ground.

Container (potted) roses come already growing in soil. They cost more and offer a narrower selection, but you can plant them through much of the year and see exactly what you are buying, often already in bloom. For beginners and for filling a gap mid-season, potted roses are the easier choice; for value and selection, bare-root wins.
